Coffee was first planted successfully on Java around 1700 by the Dutch after which cultivation slowly spread throughout the rest of Indonesia.  In fact, the coffee from Java served as a progenitor to other coffees as far away as Central America.  Some of the large coffee estates created by the Dutch 175 years ago can still be found on the volcanic plateau at the eastern tip of Java.  However, most coffee farmers are smallholders, growing coffee on an average of 1.5 hectares amongst a cluster of volcanoes in West Java.  This is where coffee cultivation first began on the island and also where the coffee we are so pleased to offer you originates as well.

Ganung Patuha is a volcano in the Rancabali mountain range of West Java. The area has a cool climate because it is surrounded by mountains, tea plantations and community coffee farming land.  Rancabali is also a conservation center for animals, namely deer and Javan gibbon.

33 small farmers contribute to Ganung Patuha, delivering their cherries to the wet mill in Tenjolaya Ciwidey. The coffee is promptly depulped and soaked in a 16 hour classic washed fermentation. The wet mill then uses solar dryers to dry the coffees with great consistency, a difficult feat for smaller operations in West Java due to the high humidity.

We are drawn to this coffee for its unique tropical sweetness of goji berries and dried mangos which is well balanced with layers of creamy milk chocolate.  We also wish to celebrate the Lunar New Year with some special coffee offerings from Asia.  So please have a happy year of the Snake and enjoy this delicious coffee!
