This beautiful coffee grows along the mountains surrounding the Mayan archaeological site of Zaculeu within the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala. The indigenous people changed the name of Huehuetenango to Ueuetenango, which translates to the "place of the elders" in the Nahuatl language - hence, the name of our offering Los Ancestros.
Not only do the diversity of microclimates and elevation of the Huehuetenango region contribute to the amazing profile of Los Ancestros but more importantly the endless commitment of the coffee growers. Since 2016, our friends at Caravela importers have partnered with small to medium scale farmers in the region who are looking to elevate their coffee production and switch from commercial to specialty grade coffee. Caravela advises producers on agronomy, processing methods, drying and storage practices, and provides general technical support throughout the year at the ground level. Today Caravela works with more than 80 farmers, who also send samples to their cupping lab to be analyzed for quality, so they can have access to the specialty coffee market and be recognized for their dedication and hard work.
We especially selected Los Ancestros because we felt its creamy body with notes of milk chocolate, blackberry, and pistachio truly provided that comforting cup which we all gravitate towards during the cold chilly seasons. So please enjoy this soothing, balanced cup of comfort coffee, cheers!
