Nestled deep in the mountainous ranges of the Cauca region in Colombia is the town of Inzá. Although remote and difficult to access due to frequent mudslides and road closures, Inzá's beautiful environment make the journey more than worthwhile. On clear days, you can see straight up to the Nevado del Huila, the highest volcano in Colombia, and the famous Paez river runs east through the valley, connecting Cauca and Huila.
Additionally, Inzá is home to a handful of smallholder coffee farming families producing beautiful micro-lot coffees. Founded in 2004, Asorcafe Producer's Association of Inzá works in conjunction with private and state organizations to provide aid to these families including subsidies for domestic economy, education, job training, and healthcare services.
The micro-lot which we selected from Inzá is grown by smallholder producer Emma Chantre. This 66 year old coffee veteran has been working in coffee for almost forty years. The coffee is picked by Emma herself, as well as her family which includes her husband Juan Bautista Pichica and her three children Nelson, Javier, and Jonny. We particularly love her coffee for its intense sweet notes of cantaloupe and mandarin oranges balanced out by a round cream body. Enjoy!
