When I first met Roberto, I was just starting in the coffee industry as a buyer at Intelligentsia, and he was managing Coopedota, one of the most successful cooperatives in Costa Rica. It was my first coffee buying trip and little did I know I was being shown how a model cooperative should operate with Roberto's focus on quality with his microlot program, experimentation at the coffee growing and post-harvest level, and passion for environmental sustainability with the first carbon-neutral cooperative in the world.
Something else which always impressed me about Roberto was his close ties to his family, cooperative members, and community. I was always attending community events each year I visited. He freely opened his home to me and introduced me to his wife and children. I always felt comfortable spending time with them and enjoyed watching them discuss coffee together. At the time, he was just beginning to share lots from his own farm Las Nubes (the clouds) on the cupping table.
Fast forward now to over a decade later, I find out that Roberto has started his own enterprise, doing what makes perfect sense to me, running M+M Pura Vida, which processes and exports coffees from his farms and those of his wife and children. And me, I have traveled to many coffee growing regions since Coopedota, tried my hand at various jobs in coffee, and in the end decided I wanted to run my own small roasting business. It seems so fitting and full circle to be sharing this lot from Roberto's first farm Las Nubes. It is as delicious as I remember with a sweet classic profile of milk chocolate, cherries, and pecans. Please enjoy!
